Welcome to my page!

Hi! My name is Amanda and I am studying elementary education at Rhode Island College. These are just a few pictures that I feel embody who I am and what I am like. 
I danced from when I was four years old until I graduated high school. Now, I work as a dance instructor at the same dance studio that I grew up in. This photo was taken in downtown Providence a few years ago during a photoshoot that the dance studio competition team was holding. 

The photo below/to the left was taken at Roger Williams Park Zoo. The zoo is one of my favorite places to be during the summer and the fall. My favorite zoo that I have ever visited is the Bronx Zoo. 



 The photo on the right  was taken in Lincoln, New Hampshire. I love to travel to new places. Although I have not yet traveled outside of the United States, I hope to someday. 





The last two photos below are photos of my dogs. When I am not working or in class, you can catch me playing with my dogs. Opie, on the left, is a six-month-old puppy. My family recently adopted him and he has been a great addition to the family. Benji, on the right, is a seven-year-old chocolate lab. He has been an amazing part of my family since we adopted him six years ago.

In "Unlearning the Myths that Bind Us", Christensen's argument may be troubling to some. Christensen argues that children's books, movies, and TV shows seldom do not include stereotypes. This is particularly alarming because by reading and watching these, according to Christensen, children are receiving a "secret education". This "secret education" is teaching children untrue and harmful stereotypes at an age when they are most impressionable.  I have chosen to focus on Disney films because there are so many examples of racism, sexism, and blatant gender stereotypes. When children watch a movie which negatively depicts a certain race, they will start to believe that this race is in fact inferior. When children watch movie after movie in which the beautiful princess is saved by her handsome prince, they are taught that looks are more important than anything else and that women need men to save them. Creating Safe Spaces

In "Safe Spaces: Making Schools and Communities Welcoming to LGBT Youth", August does a fantastic job delivering the argument that LGBT youth are not being protected in today's schools. It is the job of educators to protect all students, especially those who are typically marginalized, and most are failing to do so. By neglecting to talk about LGBTQ families and individuals or even going as far as to talk badly about LGBTQ community members, teachers are shaming these students simply for being who they are.  August speaks heavily about integration and interpretation. For our class, this should not be a new concept. Many pieces we have read lay out very similar ideas. In the article we read last week, Christensen mentions the lack of representation of certain groups in media. Certainly the LGBTQ community is under-represented, especially in children's media. Is the United States a Land of Opportunity or Limitations?

In his article titled “U.S.A., Land of Limitations?”, author Nicholas Kristof argues that the United States is not the land of opportunity. Although America was founded on being the land of opportunity, and so many people immigrated to America because of this, Kristof states,  “I fear that by 2015 we’ve become the socially rigid society our forebears fled, replicating the barriers and class gaps that drove them away.” According to Kristof, the United States is not the land of opportunity we pride ourselves on being.  In the United States, it is near impossible for those who are at the bottom economically to ever make their way to the top. Despite talent, intelligence, and hard work, many people will never make their way out of the bottom ten percent.
